Becoming a Social Enterprise

When the Little Voice team set out to create Little Voice Books they knew they wanted to create a business that would publish unique children’s books and serve as a platform to give back.

And so, they decided to create a social enterprise.

A Social Enterprise is defined as “an organization that advances or fulfills a social purpose through a business model or revenue-generating component of their operations”. This dual purpose supports not only the growth of the organization but also the growth of the communities it serves.

Little Voice’s mission and vision was founded in this very definition: to create awareness for causes and initiatives through the power of literature and illustration and to support the programs and services that serve to make a difference in our communities through the sale of our books.

The Importance of Giving Back

From the very beginning, Little Voice has been a story all about giving back. It started with Amanda’s goal to give children a book that would teach them something, that would provide a moral to the story, and a way for children to feel engaged. Eventually, Little Voice became a symbol of inspiration, a way for parents and teachers to inspire their children and students to believe that they can accomplish anything. Now, Little Voice is known across Canada as a way to fundraise and really give back in your local communities.

But why is it important to give back?

Supporting the #RosalinaStrong Pixie Fund

On February 4, 2016, the Bedynski-Belli family received the news that their five year old daughter Rosalina had been diagnosed with high risk, stage 4, Neuroblastoma.

When we first found out this news, our family was beyond speechless. Shortly after Rosalina’s diagnosis, we were introduced to the Candlelighters of Ottawa, an organization that helps families like ours cope with cancer related situations. They provided us with binders of information, prepared us for the procedures Rosalina would have to undergo, and much more.  They also donated an iPad to Rosalina filled with apps focused on learning activities in order for her to not fall behind in school. These are only but a few of the reasons why Candlelighters hold such an important place in our hearts, along with all those at CHEO.

The Bedynski-Belli family has set out to raise funds to support both the Candlelighters and CHEO for all of their amazing work in supporting their daughter during this difficult time.

When Little Voice learned of the #RosalinaStrong Pixie Fund, we knew we had to give back.

Screen Shot 2016-06-08 at 3.39.19 PMChildren are the biggest reminder of that little voice inside us, the one that gives us strength during times of weakness, and hope during times of despair. In Rosalina’s case, her little voice continues to motivate her to be strong as she undergoes treatment. Rosalina is currently undergoing her fifth treatment of chemotherapy but she remains strong with the support of her family and community.

To date, the #RosalinaStrong Pixie Fund has raised over $3,500 dollars both online and in person.

In addition to Little Voice’s regular donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, from June 10 to June 30, Little Voice has committed to supporting Rosalina’s fundraising efforts by donating $5 from every online book sale to her cause.

Let us rally behind the Bedynski-Belli family and pray for Rosalina’s speedy recovery.

Little Voice & the GCWCC

Like many entrepreneurs, Little Voice’s author and illustrator both work full time while pursuing their dream of sharing their story and message!

“Sometimes it’s hard when all you want to do is come home and take a nap but know you have a million other things that need your attention. Our little voices definitely help keep us motivated in achieving our dreams; though we work day and night to achieve our success, we wouldn’t have it any other way! The moment we see someone post our book or send us a message about how inspired they were is the moment we realize all our hard work has been worth it! We eventually become more determined and inspired to keep on working so that we may continue to share our message with others!” – Amanda Bernardo, Author

On top of running the Little Voice’s publication AND their day jobs, Amanda and Samantha also make sure to give back to their communities!

“We volunteer as often as we can, whether it be by promoting local causes or organizations, volunteering, raising awareness or simply making donations; giving back to our community is at the forefront of Little Voice.” – Samantha Clusiau-Lawlor, Illustrator

Amanda and Samantha  developed the Little Voice Forget Me Not Project to raise awareness and funds in support of the Alzheimer Society of Canada and the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County. They also give back through their #30BooksFundraiser and by volunteering their time at local schools and organizations!

It was only natural that their hard work ethic and passion to give back led them to work with this year’s GCWCC Campaign.

2015, the year I make my dreams come true!

With 2015 ahead of us, we can’t help but think of our own list of resolutions.

New Years is a perfect opportunity to think about what we want to accomplish in the year ahead.  It’s a chance to think of our goals, both big and small, and a chance to create a plan of how we can attain them. It’s also an opportunity to think of ourselves and how we can improve our own outlook, our health, our intellect, etc… As well as a chance to think of others and how we can give back, offer support and volunteer.
